New leucistic texas rat! any tips?

riiotgrrl Aug 28, 2005 07:30 PM

I have been looking for good care sheets on these guys specifically, but they all seem to group with all other new world elaphids. Are they all kept like corns, or is there specific things i should know, as with trans pecos rats>? Also, i am curious...lillith has the bug eye gene (quite obviously ) is that detrimental at all to her overall well being? My husband thinks that she is ugly as all get out but i think she is just the cats pyjamas. I have wanted one for years and i finally found a great deal on one to day at an expo. Any tips will be greatluy appreciated. Thanks!! JEn

Hi Jen,
Your texan has a face only a mother could love. Was Marty Feldman cross breeded at anytime with your rat?Lol..Just joking. As long as it eats and grows who cares what anyone thinks.Have a hot spot of 84 and a cool spot and a large water bowl and you will be fine.Congrats on your new rat...Paul

Wow,

I have seen and heard of bug-eyed leucistics (supposedly due to inbreeding during the 80s), but that one takes the cake!

As for care, just like any ratsnake. Make sure you handle it regularly so it becomes trustworthy.

LOL, I love those thing! I got my friend one (originally passed due to the bug-eyes, but now I love them!) and he's hysterical. He's really bitey, but it's like being mugged by a clown....you can't take it seriously! As far as care...they're very low maint. snakes. Me, my friend, and a breeder I work with simply keep our collubrids in rubbermaids in a warm area (temp hangs around mid 70's-upper 80's). They do just great without any heating and such. If it's gonna be in a heavily air conditioned room, a low wattage bulb to bring the temps up to mid-80's in a spot works great. Either supply a hide-box, or simply give it a lot of aspen as they'll just tunnel under it. Handle it a lot, or they do get pesky (the bug-eyed one was a yrling when I picked it up, and had minimal handling).

Chris

The tail seems to taper quite slowly and appears quite thick at the base., Thanks for pointing that out. Lillith will need a new name now.

lol...you may wanna get it probed before just assuming the sex based on looks. Shouldn't be too hard to find somebody in your area who can do it.
