"Snakes on a Plane" starring Samuel L. Jackson. Hmmm....a movie that uses venomous snakes as weapons. I bet this will give people the right impression.

WTF??? I cannot believe that. I had not seen or heard of anything like that. I for one will boycott that movie and I hope everyone here does as well. I will also put the word out at both SoCal herp groups....And maybe print up some flyers to that effect and hand them out at the NARBC show, I mean if we dont speak up this could really have a major negative affect on our already besieged hobby.

I suggest boycotting this film and logging onto movie database websites such as these below to give it the low user reviews it deserves.

No wait that may send the wrong message. I just want to know who they used (if anyone) to help them as a technical expert in the field, and/or anyone that provided help with the snakes. That is who I would love to talk to! I'm sure that it will be played up on the animal network like they did with Star Wars... though in that they never said where you can pick up one of those Rancor things and what (if any) permits are needed for them. In GA I would not be suprised if none are needed for Rancors but owning Ewoks would have stiff penalties and guidelines!

that we WATCH the movie BEFORE passing judgement on it. You never know exactly what might happen in the movie that could actually put them in a positive light. I have only seen the pictures provided in the link, but you never know what might happen at the end. Watch the movie, gain the facts, then attack. Otherwise, we might just be jumping the gun.

I agree but it is not going to matter completely. Ask someone who is not going to see it because it has snakes in it. You think they are going to have an open mind about it? Some will just file it under "Another Bad Snake Thing". At that point it is a problem and is clearly going to hurt the herp community.

At the same time, we cannot blame hollywood for using snakes to make money. It is simply their right to do so if they wish. If people dont like it because it has snakes, then perhaps they shouldn't watch it. But at the same time, there is a difference between the fiction world and the real world. That is where education comes into play.
Wasting our time and energy to boycott a science fiction movie is a real waste of our efforts. I would suggest preserving your energy and fighting the real threat....animal rights activists and unjust laws. Educate the general public through examples that the movie gives and then show them the true nature of the animals.

Sorry just couldn't resist. I agree with you, my only fear about educating the public is that after the movie I seriously doubt too many people are going to want to see any more on snakes to get the correct information. That part I can say I know from experience... After Indiana Jones it took years for me to even get near a snake!

Either way, I am going to just take the proper parent role and say that I will let the media educate my children on snakes the same way I let them educate my children in violence through Grand Theft Auto and other civicly minded programs and games. I have not had any problems with them... Wait hold on, where did that corvette parked in my son's space come from? And what are those flashing blue lights? ...Oh well

It's obvious to see that your mind is made up and I respect your opinion. But I remain saying that you can't blame hollywood for human ignorance. Hollywood makes movies to make money...regardless the topic. If they want a scary movie, they aim towards things that scare people.

Besides if your children get in trouble immitating the TV, it isn't hollywood that is failed. It is YOU that has failed as a parent.

Respectfully yours,

Chris

I was making a joke sorry it didn't come across that way. I take a very strong stand on the fact that a lot of parents today do let the media have too much of a hand in setting values for their children. Then when everything goes wrong it is the media's fault. It is the same with kids as it is for 'hots', 'boids', and other "potentially dangerous animals". Like it or not, you take some amount of responsiblity once you have one (kid, animal, same thing). Personally I think that parents should have to go through the same steps as have been brought up before with snakes. Personal responsiblity is taken too lightly with both! If my kids go out and do something wrong it is their fault. If I haven't given them the guidence not to do it in the first place than the fault is also shared by me.

I feel bad for all the species of non venomous snakes that will be used in this movie to represent venomous ones. There's enough ignorant people killing any snake they see simply because they don't know if it's venomous or not.
