interested in getting my first snake

danielle4girls4 Aug 29, 2005 12:20 PM

I'm interested in getting a snake in the near future. This would be my first snake. What kind would be the best for a beginner? I do have 4 kids, who will probabaly be interested in handling it too.We recently bought a blue tongue skink and really enjoy having him. I would like to have more reptiles now. Thanks in advance, Danielle

While it really depends upon what qualities YOU are looking for to make a final decision, I would have to say that corn snakes are some of the best beginner snakes available. Calm, inexpensive, colorful and very easy to care for. Get one that has at least a few meals under its belt. Check out the corn forum for all the great colors. Duffy

As someone who has just recently gotten into keeping snakes and so with limited experience, I've found my Mexican Black King snake hatchling to be calmer than the two corn snake hatchlings I purchased. My MBK is also more active during the day than my corns. Either the MBK or corns hatchlings can be purchased for $30 or so, and will make a good pet for kids. Hatchlings can be a bit flighty, so an older choice might be a better choice and more able to tolerate handling by 4 kids.
