So many people post about difficulty getting Western Hogs to eat (me among them), that I just wondered if anyone here knows of an apparently healthy snake, kept under proper conditions, that has actually starved itself to death? I got a yearling male Western last summer that ate a few times, then went off feed and steadfastly refused to eat for 8 months...during that time he lost very little weight, and about 6 months into the fast actually emerged, shed his skin, then burrowed back into the substrate for another couple of months...since June he's been eating like a pig, two fuzzies at a time, and has bulked up and actually grown a couple of inches in length...I guess I'm thinking that these snakes can just get by on fewer yearly calories than say rat snakes or kingsnakes...anyhow his long fast seems to have had no negative effect on him...
