Are the Super Worm beetles okay!

pepperonihead Aug 29, 2005 01:46 PM

Elvis ate one this morning. Just wanted to know if they are okay. He really went after it. It was something new and he always likes something new.

won't hurt, but don't feed these to him too often. The are higher in chitin (an insect's exoskeleton) and more difficult to digest. They can also produce an offensive odor. once in a while as a treat is fine

Gosh they stink, I use thousands of superworms and sometimes a few get themselves under something and begin the morph process, so I get the big beetles here and there.

My bearded dragon used to LOVE them, I mean did a jig to get one, LOL I always hate picking them up, they smell so BAD they are RANK , and leave the smell on you.

It's sort of a strong medicinal stink, LOL

like many insects, a chemical release is a defense mechanism. Some can be downright painful from species like the blister beetles or the bombadier - the latter actually spraying a chemical from its back end. But you're right, the super beetles just smell all the time! I asked about feeding these to my tarantulas on the ATS site and the reply was "why would you want to feed something so odoriferous?" ;-/

somebodies tank that do not like them.

I like and respect bugs, but hate to have to hold one of those stinky things, I can smell it on me, even after several washings

I always was amazed how excited my Beardie got when I would show him one.
Many of my other lizards have tried to bite one, and they actually make an awful face and toss it, like we would spit something bad out, LOL
