Help!!! Good News Bad News

jojobear Aug 29, 2005 05:49 PM

Good News: I found my long lost (over 2 months) female albino Emory last night on my patio right where she escaped from her cage.

Bad News: I have discovered in the light of day she has several ticks and now I need to get rid of them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Give her a very light coat of dust, clean her cage thoroughly and blow in a light coat of dust. Be sure to get the upper parts of the cage. The article on Dave and Tracy barker's web site says that "up" is their preferred direction of travel to lay eggs. I would also put some on the carpet in the snake room. The little buggers can travel shocking distances and will live in the carpet as they travvel to a new host. Continue to check the snake and enclosure. For the next several dauys after treatment. You need to get the eggs as they hatch, too.

Ive used sevin dust 5% for 2 decades.Im glad to see someone else actually post about it.7 dollars a can and you can treat hundreds of snakes with it.Everything new gets a dusting just to be sure...Paul

I've recently started using it too, and from what I hear, all you have to do along with it is regular cage maintance and you'll never see mites. Can't go wrong with cheap, effective solutions.

Pick the ticks off with tweezers making sure to get the heads and quarantine the snake for 6 months away from the rest of your collection. Blood work might not be a bad idea. I would steer away from using products like Sevin dust which are not labeled for use in treating mites or ticks on reptiles. Despite what other posters have said there are some very real risks involved in using products that have not been extensively tested for animal uses. If you want a tested proven product for controlling mites and ticks go to www.pro-products.com and purchase a can of Provent-a-Mite.

Sevin dust has a proven track record.I found frilled dragons are a no,no.Otherwise Ive treated 100's of wild caught tick/mite infested snakes with no instance of it harming any of them.If you want to spend $20 a can on roach spray you go right ahead...Paul
