Sliding door locks?

nekomi Aug 29, 2005 08:47 PM

Hi everyone,

Anyone know where to pick up a sliding door lock for cages? I know I've seen 'em for sale online somewhere, but I can't remember where. I had my little leucistic ratsnake wiggle out of my sliding-front cage the other day, and want to make sure he won't be able to push the door open again. o_O

Thanks! I really appreciate it.

I have seen them at both lock and glass shops. However, if it's just the snake getting out you're worried about and not others getting in, you can just lock the door with wooden dowels that you place into the track.

You can insert a small screw so it's easier to grab and remove.

Also, it sounds like you know where he escaped from, but is there any chance he squeezed out of the area where the glass overlaps?

If so, use some self adhesive weather stripping to fill that gap.

Hey, thanks for the reply! I had an idea of how he escaped after I found him under the couch the first time (nerve-wracking experience), but didn't know for sure until I saw him attempting the same stunt again. The cage I use is a custom glass cage, and he wiggled out of the gap between the sliding door and the inset glass "frame" that usually deters escapees. He then was able to push the door open enough to squeeze through that gap, too.

Weatherstripping sounds like a perfect solution. I have a roll of it in my basement, so I'm going to go apply it right now. Thank you so much!!!!

while your talking about sliding glass doors, where can i get the tracking to build a cage for? Ive heard it before but cant remember where. thanks.

If you have a number of cages to build, Outwater Plastic is as cheap as I've seen.

Rockler.com also has a few products. Type glass track into their search engine and you'll find the plastic track, which I assume you want to use.

If you have a local hardware store sponsored by Do It Best you might see if they will order some for you. It used to be that Do It Best had a policy of offering free shipping on any website item not available in the local store. But I now see the mention additional shipping for some of the track. Worth checking out.

I buy min e at a local glass shop. They are about 9.00$. I did use dowels until I got my locks like Chris said. It works pretty good. Derek

Thanks for replying! That cage you posted is REALLY nice. I wouldn't mind having a setup like that at my place. Did you build it yourself?

Yes, I just recently started building my own. I think it is the only way to go. Derek

You can also get the door locks at LLLReptile.com Just pull up the vision cages menu and look at the end; they also have the stick on door pulls.
