D'ya think she's gravid?

PiedPeddler Jul 17, 2003 11:37 PM

I caught this girl about a month ago in northern AZ. Wasn't sure if she was female or immature male. The only orange I could find on her was a spot on the body by each front leg. She's now finished the panacur treatments and quarantine and I was planning on releasing her into the outdoor enclosure, but in the past week WHAM!!! Orange bars and spots everywhere. Is this an indication she is gravid and I need to prepare an egg-laying site? Don't want her to nest outside, I'd never find the eggs and the hatchlings would be gobbled up before I ever saw them. I've bred and hatched other species, just my first female collared. Thanks in advance.

Do you think the parasite treatment will hurt the eggs? I hope not. Good luck with her & the eggs. By the way, she's a pretty little thing. = ) Kristin

should have some nice hatchlings, Arizona has some beautiful yellowhead males. Not sure about exact locale, but I've heard, and seen some. Hopefully her FRIEND was one of them LOL Good luck, Eve

The males from her group are fairly sleek, green with slight blue tint, and LOTS of white spots, not yellow heads. Since the males in her area have some blueish color, I'm hoping she'll be willing to breed with my turquiose male next year. He'll be 5 next year. How long do they usually live? There's a nice population of sleek emerald green's with yellow heads about 150mi east of Phx. I plan to catch a pair of the emerald yellow-heads for the enclosure after he passes on. Here's a photo of a male I caught and released just N.E. of Phx. the chunkiest group of collareds I've seen in AZ! BTW, I palpated what felt like a few eggs so I set up egg laying site for her after I posted last night.
Thanks
Paul

males gradually get the orange, and females seem to get it overnight.
