JCP growth rate

nekomi Aug 29, 2005 09:35 PM

Hi everyone,

I had the good fortune of picking up a discarded 24" x 19" x 10" glass sliding door display case last Thursday, while cleaning out the storage room at my church. I'm converting it to a sliding door cage by replacing the top glass inset panel with a screen.

My question is this: Due to the tall vertical space of this cage, my first thought was to use it as a juvenile setup for a JCP or another arboreal snake. What is the JCP's growth rate like, and how long would a cage this size be expected to suffice? Is it even suitable as a juvi setup?

I have a Brazilian rainbow and a leucistic ratsnake right now, and their growth rates are quite different. My BRB seems to grow much more slowly than my leucy rat. Also, my BRB is much less active, and I imagine her juvenile cage will last her much longer than for my ratsnake. How does a JCP compare?

Thanks very much for any help!!

That would suffice for anything up to 3 or so feet. Most JCP's will utilize height as well.

Thanks for replying... my BRB is about three and a half feet now, at approximately 1 year of age. Is this the same growth rate I'd be looking at for a JCP, or do they grow a bit faster than that?

Thanks!

Growth rate depends a lot on feeding shedule, how early they begin to feed, and how much they're eating. If you get a hatchling, i'd say you've got a year before you need to build a new enclosure. Note that it's gonna need a 4x2x2 foot box as an adult (i've kept a yearling in this size box without any anxiety problems)

Cheers,
Aaron.

Thanks for the clear info. Yep, I figured 4'x2' for an adult, but was curious how long it would take for an upgrade to be necessary.
I think I'm gonna wait on a JCP until I have more space for a bigger cage, and maybe get one of the small arboreal colubrids instead (a rough green snake or a jeweled racer) that have been on my wish list for awhile now.

Thanks again for the info!
