You would get all normal corns because the two genes are incompatible.

...is whether AneryA and Charcoal in the same animal produces an all-black corn.

Short answer: No.

Long answer:

Breeding AneryA to a Charcoal will result in all normals het for AneryA, Charcoal in theory. In practice, alot of Charcoals are het for AneryA as well, so you may get some AneryA's het Charcoal anyway.

If you take the offspring and breed them together, SOME of the offspring you might get would be homozygous for AneryA and Charcoal at the same time. What do these AneryA Charcoals look like? Disappointingly, they look like regular Charcoals. So... no all black corns from this route.

So how would one get an all-black corn? Here's one possible route someone has yet to go down. Charcoals have the least contrast of all the forms of Anerythrism, so they're a good starting point. (Part of the problem with AneryA is that the background color is typically very light.) Take the darkest Charcoals you can find and breed them together. Take the darkest of the offspring and breed those together. If you come across dark charcoals elsewhere, breed those in with the offspring you've got. Repeat these steps ad nauseum, and you'll wind up with the darkest charcoals you can. It's possible that you'll never quite get to something you can call an all-black corn. Or maybe you will...

(Disclaimer: I'm assuming you mean an all-black dorsal coloration. If you want an all-black belly too... I haven't a clue how you'd get there in corns. )

Here's an example of a very dark charcoal. I sold her a year or two ago.

You'll get an animal that is neither black, nor a black snake, nor a corn snake, but a hybrid that is not worth very much to anyone except those very few looking specifically for THAT particular cross.

How does crossing two species constitute breeding "for the good of the species" as you put it above? I wonder...

I know that my opinion is just that...mine...but to me "breeding for the good of the species" does NOT mean breeding one species to another species willy nilly just because you can!!!
Creating worthless life is NOT responsible breeding....

starsevol Aug 30, 2005 06:17 PM

If you did, it would no longer be a corn.
It would be a mutt.

You'd get a whole clutch of the little darlings. And they wouldn't be black in F1 - you'd probably have to spend a few years crossing back the darker specimens to get the "ideal" colour that you're looking for.

In the meantime you'll be producing dozens of murky-looking hybrids every year, that you're going to have to find buyers for.

Some of the wild-caught Normals can be a very dark muddy brown colour with blurred markings and I don't generally see people rushing to breed or buy them.

Same temperament as a corn, but get ALOT bigger!!!
Black rat snake!!
