Please comment, sex of Azureus!

hotwater9 Jul 18, 2003 12:31 AM

Back in September 2000 I purchased two Azureus (I am guessing they were about 3 months old when I got the). The attached picture was taken January 2002. They are much bigger now and about 3 years old. They get along great but I have never heard them chirp. They are in my bedroom so I think I would have heard them by now. I hear my Leucomelas almost every day and they are in a different room (I know they are much louder). I have never come across any eggs either.

So my question is this: Do you think I have two males or two females? Or what? I want to breed these suckers and want to make every effort to get one that is of the opposite sex. Thanks for any comments

The one in the background on the right side appears to be a female- the toepad seems split. The one in the foreground is difficult to tell. With better pictures- try using a macro lens on your camera- it could be easier to tell. I had a difficult time sexing mine, but after some trial and error I figured it out and now I am getting eggs every week. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately I just have a crappy Nikon digital camera and can't change the lenses. I was hoping their behavior would help, ie no calling or fighting. I will try and get a better picture though.

Thanks
Got frogs?

Males or females or what?...I did not know there was a third choice...

i would have to agree with the other poster that, based on toepads, it looks like a possible pair....however, they're both a little on the skinny side, which doesn't help...if you have a more recent picture, like this one, and both are "plump" it should be easier to make a more accurate sex determination....

I think that you may well have two (very nice) females...after seeing "itchy" in your hand - a better view of toepads (and judging by body shape)I'm more inclined now to say that itchy could be a female...I'm almost certain Scratchy is female....

nice pics.....

That would make sense to me. They have never made any noises, but then again they get along really good. Don't females usually fight?

one possible reason why you see little or no fighting is that there isn't an "active" male to fight over......

it looks like you used a flash. You might want to discontinue the use of a flash when photographing your frogs. Their eyes are very sensative and the flash can possible damage them.
