How to make wooden branches safe - get rid of the bugs, mites, etc?

icemom Aug 30, 2005 10:52 AM

Just finished building his new ehclosure.I'm trying to refurnish it since staff from the old one are too small for the new cage. We have sooo many broken branches lying around after the storm, so I've cut some off for beardie to climb on. Now, how do I make them safe? I've read that they can be baked at 250 degrees ( correct me if I'm wrong) for about 30 min, but some of the brunches I'd like to use will not fit in the oven. What can I do?

Thanks. Irina

Hello,
For branches that are too big you'll want to use a diluted solution of bleach. usually a solution of 10:1 works well, that's 10 cups water to 1 cup bleach. and then use a spray bottle to spray the items and use a scrub brush to brush them off and then use water only and thoroughly rinse the items and let them sit for a day or so until they are dry and the bleach smell is gone.
