BRB feeding

BoidBoy77 Aug 30, 2005 05:17 PM

Hi everyone. I just got my first BRB a month ago at a reptile show. She is feeding great, it's just the size of the food items and how often I give them to her is what I have a question about. She is approx 2.5 ft. I am feeding her a small(3-4 inch) rat, minus the tail, every 5 days. Is this ok, or are the rats im giving her too small. I want her to grow up to be a big, healthy snake(I'm a strong disbeliever in powerfeeding though) I've read BRB's can get obese very easily because they're such ravenous feeders. I guess the thing I'm really wanting to know is:
1. How often do I feed a young BRB?
2. What size rodents should I feed her so she grows up to be big(but healthy)?
Thanks so much

Hi, first I am making an assumption here, since you indicated it is 2 1/2 feet long, I am assuming it is a yearling (or older) NOT a neonate. so once every two weeks would be fine.

My typical feeding regimen:
Neonates once per week
yearlings once every two weeks
adult males and female pets once a month
adult female breeders once every two weeks
(Grivid females will typically not eat for 5 months so need a shorter feeding interval to "catch up"

Prey size - about the same diameter as snake at largest girth (without tummy bulge from prior meal)

Your assumption is correct, she is indeed a yearling. So next reptile show I will get a little bigger rats and start feeding her once every 2 weeks. Thanks, I really appreciate your response.
