I have a Nikon D70 that I cannot complain one bit about. For a total photography newbie it takes some decent photos...

D70'd are extreamly nice cameras!! I haven't used the other one that you were talking about but If I had to do this over again I would be getting the D70 For sure!!

Thanks Erik

for snake photos a DSLR is overkill .. remember along with the cost of the body you will likely drop another 3K for lenses , tripod, filters etc... the list goes on and on ..

here's a shot taken with a 230 coolpix (I also own a D70)

I'm looking to take pictures of lots of things from action to stills. I read an article comparing the two and what I got was the D50 was almost as good but more forgiving for the non-professional, and of course, a bit less expensive.

Quick note...that "less forgiving" thing is kind of a useless statement with digital...seeing as how they have fully automatic modes, which work near perfectly in most situations. The only problem with the d70 I ever had, was that the super-fast shutter speed was completely useless indoors (forget exactly what speed I was able to get clear shots with), regardless of the amount of lighting...but the shutter speed with flash was high enough that it didn't really matter.

Basically what it comes down to is this...

The D70 is faster, and has a MUCH better lens.

The Digital Rebel is cheaper.

Which is more important to you?

wait...were you asking digital rebel vs d70? or the NIKON d50 ve the NIKON d70? If so, the only diff is the d70 is faster and has a few more advanced features.

in mind. Faster? How much faster? Would it matter to the non-pro or is the extra cost of the D70 worth it?

pick the one that is most comfortable in your hands. I find the rebel XT to be a little to small for hands when using a sizeable lens... as for features, there really isn't that much of a difference... just pick the one that "feels" right.

cmlreptiles Aug 31, 2005 12:43 AM

Well, the D70 is sickeningly...uselessly fast lol. If you're just gonna be having fun with the camera, taking some nature shots and shots of your snakes, the D50 is just fine. Now, if you wanna try and freeze your snake mid tongue flicker...the D70 would come in handy. I've sold quite a few D70s, and never had any complaints. The lens is kinda heavy, but with the shot quality, you learn to live with it. BTW, I worked for Ritz Camera for a while so I can answer pretty much any questions you have.

And a shutter speed of 1/8000 vs 1/4000. What can the 8000 get that 4000 cannot? 4000 is damn fast.

Well, I'd personally take the D70 just because I have a little more experiance with SLR cameras and feel comfortable working with all the advanced features. I also llike to do a lot of freeze-frame shooting, and I think it would be fun to experiment with what you would actually need 1/8000 to freeze. For me, it would just be worth it to spend the extra couple hundred $ to get the top of the line entry level D-SLR.

You really can't beat Nikon for picture quality. I was surprised at how heavy it was compared to the compacts I have been using, and even an old 35mm.

The weight is mainly in the digital series lens. And while it is slightly annoying, given the incredible quality of the pictures I could live with it very easily.
