Hognose cage cleaning question

Turtlequest Aug 30, 2005 05:43 PM

I have my two new 2 month old W. Hogs in a 30 gallon aquarium with a divider in the middle. So basically the setups are like 2 side by side 10 gallon tanks, only higher.

I have the floor filled with about 3 inches of aspen bedding, a water dish and a rock hide. How often do i clean/change the aspen bedding? Can i change it once a month, only cleaning the poop spots when i see them? Just wondering how often you guys change your aspen bedding. Also, I usually fill my water dish, then let it evaporate dry before filling it up again. Is this okay?

Thanks.

Not sure about the aspen bedding, as I use something totally different. I would give them fresh water everyday. My hoggies drink on a regular basis, and often use their water dish as a toliet or badai (spelling?) They just love to crawl through the water right after they have pooed, often right after getting clean water!! I think they do it on purpose Fresh water is better than stagnent, and it will be stagnent if you are waiting until it evaporates. That is my 2 cents.

As long as you spot clean frequently, I feel that you do not have to change the aspen bedding that frequently. I personally only do it once every two months.

Although I am as guilty of it as anybody else, the water bowl should be changed and disinfected frequently. Aside from accumulated feces, the water bowl is by far the biggest source of pathogens. Warm, and moist, what else do they need?

Definitely want to keep up with the water bowl being cleaned frequently. My eastern loves using the water dish as a toilet. She also likes to go in the food dish too. At least it makes cleaning the cage much easier.
