OT: my new Tegu ROY!

tristan Aug 30, 2005 05:55 PM

Hi everyone,
I got a tegu this past weekend. He's an argentine black and white and i named him Roy. My full name is Tristan Roy Egualada, so you could see the word "tegu" in my name already! LOL
He's 3' long and is quite tame and loves to explore.
Hope you enjoy the pics.
Tristan

Geez, where do you keep him? Very nice looking.

Thanks!
He's housed in a 6 X 3 X 18" vision cage. I plan on moving him to an 8 X 4 X 2 in the future. But this will do for now. He's gonna be 4.5-5 ft when he's full grown.

Congratulations Tristan, he is a great looking tegu. It's really nice for you that he is tame, makes him much more fun to have. I was contemplating a blue, but they need housing that is just a little too big for me to handle. Good luck with him. Keep us posted as to his growth.

Hey Pam,
Blues are the smalles of tegus and are one of the easiest to tame. i think males get like 3.5 ft and females 3 ft. Roy will hopefully get 4.5-5ft one day if i'm lucky. How big are your monitors? are they easily handled?
i was thinking about a black throat or savannah monitor but fell in love with tegus... maybe in the future?

Hi Tristan,
My largest ackie, Dorado is about 22-24" STL, a very maneageable size. You can touch any of my monitors at any time and they will sit like dogs for the most part while you scratch their backs. They are squirmy when handled, some will sit for a short time. They are really nosy critters so what they really want is to explore. It's fun to think about what you might get in the future. When I have lots more monitor experience, I would love some blue trees, but I am not there yet. The Savs and blackthroats are nice too. Good luck with Roy.

hello eve,

if i can teach Roy to drive... i would let him go to Jersey and visit you and Cleo and Dog can be in the passenger seat!

i wish we (people on this forum) were closer to each other. we could have a "uro park" like the dog parks and let them run around.

but this forum is the next best thing! i love it!

oh, i know how you feel about feeding them mice/rats. Roy also eats raw or cooked ground turkey/beef, eggs (raw or boiled), mealworms, grapes, bananas, strawberries, etc along with the mice/rats (which i feed to him thawed from the freezer).
i try to balance his diet but it seems like his favorite are definately mice!
