Potting soil for hide?

tristan Aug 30, 2005 06:12 PM

My heart almost dropped when I couldn't find my tegu on my patio. (I was in the bathroom). It's got a 4 ft high wall so I thought he might have climbed and jumped.
I looked around frantically until I opened up the bag of potting soil in the corner and there he was! He was completely submerged underneath and all I could see was his tail.
This leads me to the question:
Is potting soil good to put in his hide? He seemed to like to burrow himself in it.
Thanks,
Tristan

I read in the Robby Hamper book on leopard geckos that using one part potting soil to two parts virmiculite would work in a hide. That might be a ratio to start with.

For burrowing monitors, alot of keepers use plain old dirt. Somthing with a sandy consistancy seems to work well, since it retains the moisture, as well as holding shape as they burrow into it. A good 2 feet of substrate to burrow into is reccomended.

hey russ. i love that burrow! your tegu must love it too!
i just got my new vision cage last Sunday and I'm not sure if i want to cut a hole in it yet. i was thinking of getting a rubbermaid storage bin for his hide.

here's my question: which one do you think he would like more?
1. the hole on the side?
2. the hole on the top?

i was thinking 1. since i've been told tegus don't like to climb but i think the rubbermaid isn't that high anyway... can't decide.
