moniel Aug 30, 2005 07:00 PM

well, about a month ago this snake/python ate one of our harliquins, as you can it threw it out(is this normal?)
and i can't identify what type this is.
how do i pull it out of the cage, when i put a stick in it attacks me. how do i hold it?
i read that their bites are painful,i dont want to know how painfull it is right now.
if i can manage to hold it safely i can take care of it.

thanks.

That is a reticulated python. Those are HORRIBLE living conditions. Quite possibly the worst I've ever seen. If you are serious about keeping this snake then go to newenglandreptile.com and research it there. Then come back here or on repticzone and ask specific questions about its care. Keep in mind that is going to range in length anywhere between 15 and 34 feet(the record). If you can't take care of it correctly give it to someone who can.

my goodness that is big...well i think ill be giving to someone who knows. it just stumbled in our house by accident. someone could have bought it and escaped. oh well.
but for the moment ill try to take care of it until some one gets it.
thanks

I was very confused by that. The snake just stumbled into your house by accident? Where do you live, and how big is the snake right now?

If it just wandered into your house, I think you should let it just wander back outside, or even call some sort of animal control to get the snake. I'm still not convinced that it's a rock python....to me, it looks more like an amazon tree boa...that's the only reason I asked where you were from.

But either way, if this snake just found you, I'd call animal control. And what the hell is in the cage with the snake? A half eatan corpse?

that was our bird it ate, for some reason it threw it out.a harlequin. the snake is around a foot, i think.i hope i can get someone who knows how to take care of it.

AustHerps Aug 31, 2005 07:48 AM

I think that she/he is trying to say that she/he keeps harlequins, and that she/he found the snake in with a dead bird.

Logically - dead bird, new snake... snake killed bird.

I don't think that is the setup for the snake. That's what our dearly beloved bird used to (bless it's little sole) live in.

I could be wrong.

I agree... call animal control. You don't want to release it if it isn't native to the area.

So, It might be illegal to keep it (we aren't allowed to even take a photograph of a wild herp without a permit here in Vic, Australia).

Or, It might be illegal to put it back.

Call someone who knows.

If you're in Australia, that's a reticulated python (no doubt about it), a young one, and it is not naturally known to live in Oz. It eats birds (and mammals), and was only doing what it was born to do. It escaped from someone locally, and are probably looking for it. Sorry about the bird. PS...you have a beautiful country, I've been there.

AustHerps Sep 01, 2005 08:31 AM

Australians aren't allowed to keep anything that doesn't occur naturally. Retics are not found in Australia, and the only way someone might have lost it is if it originally arrived balled up in a pair of socks, and managed to get past x-ray machines and sniffer dogs at customs.

We don't allow any importation or exportation.

... i just read your post below and it seems you've already realised

OMG!!!!!!! It isn't a african rock python OR amazon tree boa! Its a RETICULATED PYTHON! Just look at it! Its obious! lol

Jaykis Aug 31, 2005 08:58 AM

Ok....the owner is NOT in Aust....my error. But it's an escapee, nonetheless.

Steve_Ray Aug 31, 2005 09:57 AM

Are Reticulated Pythons native to where you live? Its kind of hard to tell by the pic, but the retic doesn't look like a mainlander.

That thought crossed my mind, too. Also, since it got into the cage on it's own, why can't it leave on it's own?

That is a reticulated python. So this happened a month ago. You need to get that snake out of that cage. Do you own a pair of thick welding gloves. If not I would go get some. If its only a foot long the gloves should be fine. use a stick to pick it up with keep it away from your body.Try to scoop him about midbody. It is young and very scared and if it regurgitated that meal it is hungry. Can you get a rubber maid tub make sure the top can be secured. drill some holes in it. That is were you should keep him. Get it out of that cage now. use news paper to line the bottom of the cage. you will be able to transport him in that. what is the temp like durring the day and at night he may not be leaving due to it being warm there. Were do you live if we know that there maybe someone who can help you we can direct you too.
