35 eggs and counting

rnrlesnar Jul 18, 2003 01:38 AM

As of now, I'm currently incubating 35 box turtle eggs. A few of them should be hatching in the next 3-4 weeks. Several of my females have laid two clutches this summer. My largest female has laid 14 eggs, two batches of 7. The other females all lay 3-4 eggs.

I'm just doing what I did last year, bury them in an aquarium of top soil, put a heat lamp a few feet above them and pour water on the eggs every couple of days. That method hatched 14/19 eggs last summer. In addition to the 14 I hatched, I found 11 babies in my pen. It's likely I have eggs in my pen that I do not know about.

I keep the hatchlings inside for a year to give them a head start. It lets them grow a little bit before dealing with winter, even though our winters are relatively mild. Then I release them into my pen. The pen can support a lot of turtles, so over crowding isn't a problem, yet
