roaches...

denise1 Aug 30, 2005 07:42 PM

I need info on roaches as feeders...I'm tired of the constant chirping but want what's best for my guys...not to mention the smell and the continuous buying of bugs...thanks...

I would check this forum thread out, its from me, and I get a lot of answers from this cat that replied to me. His website has tons of info on roaches, I am starting my colony, and my pets love these things a ton!

i'm in the process of starting a colony of discoid roaches for my dragons now. i hate crickets too, for all the same reason. i got mine from james at blaberus.com. he's got a ton of info on his website and was very helpful. my first shipment didn't survive and he replaced it no questions asked. even threw in extras. i highly recommend him. here is a link to the site.

I got about 50 lobster roaches to try out & have probably fed 10-15 to my BD. He LOVES them! They suggest not feeding the most mature ones w/ wings (you CAN... but ) anyway, they are MUCH easier than crickets IMO. They have already started having babies and we have all sizes going. I haven't really figured out a way to put them in w/ my CG w/o them going all over the cage yet ... but I'm getting there! If you are feeding a lot of bugs, I'd suggest getting 100 roaches, set 50 up as your breeders and another tank that you pull and grow out the babies in and feed from that. I'm scared I'm going to feed off the parents from mine with everything together and just dumping them in for dusting & feeding.

Good luck!

not sure it would work for your CG but my husband designed what we call McDonalds...lol Smaug used it when he was smaller and the Little One still uses it...I have ceramic tile in my tanks...some stacked 3 high for the correct basking heat and the smaller crix can get in the space between...to cut down on it he designed this...it doesn't keep them from completely getting out but there are less trhat do, alot less unless of course you leave it in there for a while...he took a critter keeper and cut out a square at the front, he then re-attached the plastic using very small hinges at the bottom of the door...there is a lever at the top that holds the door shut, when the door is poen it acts as a ramp for the beardie...I put crix in it whith the door closed, place it in the tank, open the door and the beardie goes runnin' in...even after they get too big to fit inside they'll use it by just standing at the opening...the door opening begins about an 1 1/2" from the bottom so they can't climb out too easily...some duct tape in it and on the inside of the door for traction...

That's a great idea, Denise. Do you have any pics of that?? Also....how's Little One doing? How big is he/she now...and any idea of the sex?
