Lia, me new box turtle

buslady Aug 31, 2005 12:15 AM

I have an interesting tale.
I go to Petco.
They have Ambos, but they looked bleah..poor little girls. After a bit the guy could tell I was a turtle person. He says someone dropped off a boxie and if I wanted it, it was mine. I fell in love. She's a little girl. I'm not 100% on her species though, I thought 3-toe but I saw markings that might say Eastern...so for you boxie experts, what is she? She is absolutely not afraid of anyone. She just hangs out, looking around. I dunno what her story was, I guess someone got tired of her...fine with me, She's a doll!
And before you freak over the tank, I know it's small. It's my 20L; but I felt it was better than what PetCo could provide her. Possibly later on, maybe I'll look into that new Waterland tub. But for the time being, this is her home now. I have the pie tin for a temporary water dish, I'm gonna get a planter pot bottom tomorrow. I gave her a little food just in case. Some humidity as well. (her tank at petco was DRY DRY DRY!)

last BUTT not least...

I assume cause her tiny tail and flat plastron, she's a she.
Here's her page if anyone wants to look, same pics though. More story too.

That tail looks female to me. She looks like 3 toed to me too, & maaan those nails look long like they need a little trimming.
Have you ever thought about using huge Rubbermaid storage boxes instead of glass aquariums for housing?
I use a 30 gallon for Shell E my indoor box turtle. I allow her out often, I don't feed her there, I don't water her there but for sleeping it's great. It's easy to heat with a Dragon's Lair heat mat & for winter a 100 watt ceramic heat emitter to go along with the heat mat. The heat mat sits on the stand then the plastic tanks sits on top of that. The mat & plastic do not actually touch but the heat does make a warm spot for her so it works out well.

My painted turtle has lived in a 55 gallon clear plastic Christmas tree storage box for several years, it cost me a whole 20 bucks...although he is about to move into a 55g glass tank. My yellow mud lives in a Rubbermaid too. I love these plastic tubs because they're so light weight which makes them easy to move for cleaning.

just go to waterlandtubs.com, it should be right on the homepage. It's alot of dough but it's quality materials. I notice Rubbermaids crack when they sit out in the sun. the waterlands are supposed to be good for the outside.

It'll be awhile I hafta save up the dough, but she'll be upgraded...

I've never seen a rubbermaid crack in the sun, and I've had some sit in the sun/rain all year, it's frost that'll crack them, why you'd want to put it outside for a turtle though is beyond me even a waterland tub would probly over heat and bake your turtle, also going by your pics your turtle is a very colorful female 3-toe boxie.

Those are nice expensive tubs, looks like a good home for my aquatic mud turtle.

the small waterland would be great for a little muddy. I was looking for a mud but I guess I wasnt supposed to find one cause Lia needed a home.

I like the way it's built because it looks like he could just walk up to a "land area" on his own without flipping over backwards. Too bad they're THAT expensive, I looked on eBay to see if anyone had one at a discounted price & nope. lol
Looks like that one will be on my list of things to buy one day.

Nah outside for a few hrs of real sunlight, not all the time. I dont want her out all the time, it's too easy for one of the stupid neighbors to come steal her.
Waterlands aren't supposed to crack, they're made for outside.
I've destroyed quite a few rubbermaids(smaller tubs) from leaving them outside for months. They become brittle and you can stick your foot right thru them!
