Crushed walnut shells questions??

Hello Everyone,
I am using crushed walnut shells as a substrate for my leopard tortoise. Its ESU reptile desert blend ground english walnut shells and it says its safe if ingested and passes right through the animal. What are your opinions on it? Thanks
