Larges Ball you have seen in person

nogard Aug 31, 2005 01:41 PM

I was talking to a local pet store owner about ball python sizes, he was telling me that in the early 90's when he was importing balls he would come accross females between 6-7 feet and males that were approaching 5 feet, I just wanted your opinions on the accuracy of this statement, He went on to explain that the reason that we dont see any large females from the wild is that most are caught and killed or sent to the usa, and europe. He is a legit guy, he got out of importing because he said that he was tired of selling balls that dont eat, or that are to sick to save, but he still imports indo monitors. Any input would be cool, just thought that it would be a good discussion
thanks

When I was a boy, bp's ran 8-9 feet and wieghed in at 50 lbs. They were venomous back then too. And they had legs! And we liked it that way!!!

It was a 5 mile walk to school - up hill both ways! We didn't have fee - no less shoes. And we liked it that way!!!

Oooh! That was fun. : )

The thread has officially gone down hill. : )

Back when Tom Ctutchfield had his shop open, around 94 or so, he showed us a ball python that was pushing 6' but Tom was sure impressed by its size and if they used to come in at 7-9', he would have seen them.

I think Jared has shown pictures of his 6 foot female - tho I never saw it in person that would be the bigest one I've ever seen. I also hear that Ian G has also imported some monsters - not sure if they alre long big or just heavy big.

The ones Ian imports are huge, both long and heavy. One impaticular that he imported last year weighed 6500 grams and laid 17 eggs. People can have all the speculation they want and say that its not true. But ive seen it. Next time I get my hands on one ill take some photos.

I personally saw two six footers in the very early 90s at a local pet store. I thought they were small Indian pythons from across the store until I got closer.

She is just shy of 6' and weighs 10 lbs.

The pic is over a year old.

I think this pic shows a pretty nice contrast between
a hatchling and one of my larger females.

Enjoy!

...a ball python should be able to hatch out 40-50 babies
at a time! Glad they don't...!

When I was in high school I worked at a pet store and we used to go to the importer in Detroit to hand pick out our herps. I saw a number of 6 footers, and one that measured in at almost 7 ft. I remember because I thought it was a burm at first, and the importer was so proud of how big it was. This was in the early 90's.

I used to see all kinds of things then, I wish I knew then what I know now. I remember seeing piebalds in the bins with the wild types and other not so normals colors that remind me of many of the morphs out today. That importer used to bring in something like 50,000 a year and I remember him trying to push the piebalds on us for half price because they were "screwed up." Back then they thought the eggs incubated at the wrong temperature or something idiotic like that, so they weren't worth as much. If I only knew know what I know then, I wouldn't still be paying college loans.
