canned silkworms...

beastie Aug 31, 2005 04:16 PM

we have a juvi beardie, he's doing very well on live prey and salads (including pellets mixed in...) but he ignored the heck out of a few canned silkworms i tried to give him the other night...

has anyone had any success with the canned ones, or should i just go with live?

thanks!

My bearded LOVES canned silkworms. I bought them really for my hingeback tortoise. I can't get him to eat live prey, so thought he might eat these. The hingeback loves them and so does my beardie, Zilla. They eat them first like dessert.

I would go with live silkworms, they are much better than dried canned ones. Besides, who would like something that is dry, full of chemicals (ie preservatives) and lifeless? Not even sure they have real silkworms in those cans as the picture certainly doesn't look like any silkworm I have seen, looks more like a tent catapiller's coccoon.

Silkwormws are very easy to keep and raise. Only real constant expense is the silkworm chow.

I don't know what they are...I would guess they are (were) some sort of cocoon. The product is a dark brownish form of something that smells ATROCIOUS. I already made my views on canned products quite clear in another thread that got rather out of hand, so I won't do it again. All I will say is ya can't go wrong with feeding healthy, live silkworms.

The canned silkworms are silkworms that are in cocoons and they are Stank!!! They are very bad smelling and none of my reps will touch them. One of my leo's chewed on one and spit it out. I've got Leo's, Beardie's, Bibrons, Day geckos and cresteds and have tried the canned silk worms with all of them and no one was interested in them. They all prefer live food so I stick with that. Anyways, if you read the label on the canned silkworm can I believe it says on there that those are cocoons.
