Black bearded female

Gunilla Jul 18, 2003 05:56 AM

Just curious… My female Disas’ beard is always very dark/black. When she is resting – it is black, when she is excited – it is black. Not as black as a males’ beard, but still very black. When my male is relaxed his beard is light, but not Disas.

Does anyone else have a female with a constantly black beard? I am just wondering how common it is?

Disa is the dragon to the right.
Cicero (the male) is in the middle.
Teo (female) to the left.

Gunilla, I had never seen a female with a black beard, I've seen bright orange, white and gold, but never a black one! When you posted pictures I always assumed that was Cicero.

Perhaps its a base color for her, which Black is not a common base for dragons. If I remember correctly there are some black dragons that come from the same area where the vittceps, rankins and barbata's areas meet in Australia, coastal south. There is only a small lap over area and and barbata's, rankins and vitticeps from there have some traits not seen in other dragons in Australia

I am curious, does she have a yellowish or light orange color mouth tissue? That is also a common trait of the southern coastal dragons. The Rankins in that area are what the henrylawsonii's were named from, but the rankins in Northern Australia that the stock in the United States comes from are so different they are considering naming them a different species

My female, Bubbles, her beard can turn very black when she "beards" at things. It doesn't stay that color. But I know she's a girl... being a mommy and all. Is it weird for females to display black beards?

The inside of her mouth is yellowish too, but so is my males and he's a snow.

Yes, Disa is unusual in many ways…! Black beard (Since she is the mother of the babies I hatched last year I am sure she IS a female..! and black eyes (well, almost – but you have to look very closely to see that they are VERY dark brown)

I honestly don’t know exactly what color her mouth tissue is – and right now she is asleep (in the sofa!) – it is 2 AM here in Sweden! And I can’t wake her up just too look in her mouth, can I…? I will look tomorrow and post my answer here then, now I am off to bed too!

VERY rarely Disas’ beard is light orange/beige – but that is not often. Only when she is very cold – or maybe asleep. So I guess her “base color” isn’t black/dark?
