substrate

which is a better substrate aspen or cypress mulch, or could i even mix the 2?

Aspen tends to get moldy. I have used everything out there. Triple milled cypress is what I use on all my adult and sub-adult snakes and Good old newspaper is the substrate of choice for hatchlings.

If you can't get triple milled ....double milled is ok. I would stay away from cheaper quality cypress because of bugs and I have found some low quality cypress does have cedar mixed in.
