Assisted Feeding

stormyva Jul 18, 2003 06:53 AM

We recently acquried a male HMD from a local pet store. I am a sucker for an animal that isnt getting proper care and we wanted a male. The employees in the herp dept had him out of the cage and sitting on thier shoulders for most of every day and I felt bad for the little guy. If it weren't for that I would have held out for a CB male from a breeder. Anyways.... the only way that he has eaten is with our "assistance". We have to pull open his mouth and place the earth worms in his mouth. At that point he will chew them up and eat them. He will eat two red wigglers every other day this way but refuses to open and take them on his own.

Any ideas?

Here's a pic of the little guy, Makalu.......

Nice lizard! What is a "HMD"...?
I am happy to hear that he will get proper care from now on.

I rescued a bearded dragon myself 2 weeks ago. His former owner didn't want him anymore..

They pic is of a Horned Mountain Dragon (Acanthosaura Capra)
HMD's are really cool lizards to have as pets.
They are easier to care for than a Beardie, but in my opinion do not have nearly as much personality. (Guess you have to decide if you want the personality or the ease of care)
Froggieb has a great site dedicated to the Acanthosauras.

Hi
if i wanan get a animal back to eating zelf then i cool of some cricks.
i put some cricks in a plastic container for 1,2 min in freezer til they just stop moving then i dust them and drop them front of animal.
then after a while the cricket wil slowly move and most of time they r dead meat .
its very easy to catch a cooled of cricket for a animal.
nice lizard
