im a vet tech, and your advice is usually almost what id say. i work at a cat/dog vet but ive got a new grad who likes pocket pets and birds and is willing to start learning herps! ive also worked with DVM's in the past who let me do minor Sx and Tx on my rescues as long as i find it all in books and they are ok with it.

I am an animal health technologist, or Albertan for vet tech

I've had reptiles and amphibians for 16years now and am soon going back to school to become a DVM (this winter, I'm so excited!). You can only specialize so much as a tech! I encourage you to seek all the reptile continueing education you can find, and read up on EVERYTHING! Reptiles just fascinate me and it seems like every free minute I have I'm researching care requirments for some species, on the kingsnake forums, or perfecting the husbandry for my own animals.

The best course I've ever taken was the basic veterinary medicine course on the Veterinary Information Network. Does your clinic have this? If they don't I recommend it wholeheartedly. I am pushing for a more advanced course for those already with both feet in Also join ARAV for their journals and visit their yearly conferences. Last year was in Tuscon, and next year will be in Baltimore.

Perhaps we'll meet at a tech/vet seminar someday

I forgot to add the disclaimer for those that read this, that although I am a vet tech I am NOT yet a veterinarian. If your animal needs it I will always recommend a visit to your vet clinic and the internet is not a replacement for proper veterinary care!

Cheers everyone

Ian
