locality mole kingsnake photo

hey everyone just thought I would share this picture of a beautifull red mole kingsnake. The ancesters of him were collected in Pender County NC. I have quite a few of them from this locale and breed them each year. They are so variable but from this locale they are almost always really nice as adults. This particular one was purcahsed from Robert Cox of Peace River Herps. Enjoy and I will post some more of my breeder moles later this week and some other locales that show some amazing variability in this caligaster subspecies.

Great snake. They are quite variable in color pattern throughout their range. What other localities are you currently keeping?
I have a few myself and I have a few "lone" males as well. One is like yours, from Pender Co.,NC lines.

Most I've seen from Alabama however were very drab and dark.
It has been difficult to find a nice one from north Florida.
Do you have any from SC?

Hi I have N.Fla moles that are somewhat generic , meaning they arent any more specific than that and I also have some that are very specific in there locale from Calhoun and Bristol County. The N.Fla moles are nice but the best in my opinion are the ones from southern NC and Northern SC. I have some SC locales but nothing paired yet that I can think of besides the ones from the Northwestern part of that state that are very drab when compared to other SC locales. I also have some moles from central NC like Wake County and many from the sandhills of NC.

Beautiful mole king. I'm kind of kicking myself for not picking up a pender co. red mole king last Saturday at a show. I do plan to get one. I like some of the Va. locality moles as well as the pender co. ones from NC.

Yeah they are not always easy to find. The Va Hypos are pretty much gonna be available next year in some small numbers. This morph was worked with by several different breeders in my understanding but proved infertile overall besides a few possible hets that came about. Different breeding techniques were tryed with the original hypo but almost all failed. Well this year quite a few hypos from Va lines came popping out from more than one breeder so look for that real soon. The average Va mole king looks awesome as a hatchling but overall turns solid brown 90% of the time. The line currently seen in captivity from certain breeders representing Va animals is so different that many wonder how pure there breeding efforts have been. Never the less the line most common representing Va animals in captive collections is the same one the hypo hails from so that is interesting--The line is from the northern part of that state. I just got my first maryland moles in yesterday and they are locality specific from a unheard of locale. There is also a up in coming line of moles from Beaufort County NC that will rival the Penders in beauty BUT THESE WILL BE HOLD BACKS THIS NEXT YEAR! The Beaufort county female I have was caught in the mail box of Goose Creek State Park by the staff and turned over to me by the ranger who I have exchanged info regarding moles there with since 2003. Anyway that mail box story is true but so unheard of that it is hard for me to believe!

They are a great snake and I always wonder why they are not a more sought after snake in the hobby. I have a pair of calligaster calligaster from here in KY. They are a really variable snake when it comes to coloration and pattern.

Here are some pics from the prairies found here in KY...

This is what I call the "striped" variant. See these quite often..

This is a tough old fella, he had a pretty bad wound, but it looked like it was healing well.

Here is a juvenile, maybe a year or two old...

Hope you enjoyed the pics......
Brian

They are especially nice from the western Piedmont of NC, although very different from those Pender Co. animals. Dark red saddles on a buckskin background...maybe even a little pink mixed in on some specimens.

They tend to hold their color pretty well out here as well. I have caught them to 30 inches with colors that would rival the juvi's. Caught one a couple of years ago that was 40 inches (the largest I've ever seen) that still held it's pattern.

I'm suprised that mole kings haven't taken off more in the pet trade. In my opinion, they are prettier than corns and have every bit as good a disposition. My 17 month old son can interact with mine at home with no problems.

I have some from Hendersonville NC and Spartanburg SC. They are quite different than the Penders and other southeast NC locals , but your right they are nice from there.--Joe

How does Mole King behavior differ from common Kings?
