killing multiple rabbits/prey items with co2

jwilson Sep 01, 2005 10:13 PM

I am looking for a better way to kill rabbits and chicks prior to freezing them. I have heard co2 works. any specific info on that process or other ideas other than manual cervical displacement would be welcome .Thankyou

It is the best way I have found. I use a 5 gal buck with a "bulkhead" fitting (I drilled a small hole first) used some tubing and a valve and canister assembly I purchased for about $47.00 at my local paint ball store. Take a look at the pictures. To fill my canister with CO2 I go to the same place and it costs me $3.00 each time. I feed everyweekend and it lasts me about 2-3 months. Very cost effective!

I have been thinking about doing this and was wondering if the CO2 bottles at Walmart will do the same thing. I have never been to a paintball store. I am assuming if the bottle says refillable, that the paintball stores will refill it. Anyone using these?

Not sure I know which bottles your speaking of at Wal-Mart. The paintball store will fill any bottle that is DOT certified for CO2. The concern I would have is that CO2 bottles have to be able to handle about 1800 PSIG, since they fill the bottles with "liquid CO2" and it vaporizes once the pressure is reduced. I have never seen them at Wal-Mart that could be refilled. I would ask the clerk to make sure it can be refilled. I live in a realatively small town (pop. about 95k) and I use the paitball store only. The refills on mine cost $3.00 and it lasts me 2-3 months using it every weekend.
