Wild Caught, Then Released Rainbow (Pics)

XSamX Sep 01, 2005 10:37 PM

So I went to the amazon this summer, to see pics of the trip check out my thread on the field notes forum. Anyways we caught this beautiful rainbow boa among many other snakes and herps. This snake was far better looking in both color and temperament than any captive rainbow I have ever seen. He was a mean sucker too. Anyways, we took him on board for a photo session and then released him where he was found. thanks for looking

Sam,
...Looks like a great trip. To go with Bill Lamar as your guide was especially lucky. Were you on the upper Amazon near Iquitos? What time of year is best to go to see the most snakes?
Jeff

Jeff, we started our trip in Iquitos and worked our way down to Requena, then back. The real fun took place at night as we would stop and hike miles off river into the forest, finding tons of stuff. It is my impression that different times of year are better for different species of snakes, there is no one golden month. July is partly a wet season for the amazon, and the water brings out the frogs, which in turn bring out the smaller species of snakes and those which dwell in the forest. Yet when the water is high, those species which spend much time in the water (anaconda) are nearly impossible to find. So I guess its all the luck of the draw or what you specifically want to find that you should plan a trip around.

Very nice catch. I love caring for these animals in captivity, but nothing really compares to seeing them in their natural environment. I bet it felt awesome. Congatulations,

Mike
