first off, for those of you that remember a couple days before daytona I noticed my female het pied had a RI. Took her to a vet, put her on 7 day treatment of oral baytril. I raised her temp to 95-96 hot end and 91-93 cool end. I have also been misting the cage every other day to keep humidity around 70. I noticed a little improvement around day 5-6. My question is, how long has it taken people with experience treating RI's for the snakes to pull through it? There has been little change in the last week except a little more stuff being "coughed" up and less congestion in the body of the snake. I believe this is a good thing as less mucus in the lungs has to be better. I will be taking her to the vet again on monday for a check-up. Thanks for any help in advance,
Josh Hutto

Hey Buddy ,

Remember me ??? I actually had a prized animal, show syptoms of RI a few years back , mucus, gaping mouth , sneezing...out of nowhere. No other animnals , just one . Qaurentine , raised temps , and vet visit followed .Funny thing is ,A 10 cycle of injectable baytryl offered little improvement , she needed just a tad more of something?? to get her over this as 12 days had passed .I had recommended to my vet to try an "OLD" antibiotic that I had used back in th 80's called Cloremphenycol , it worked wonders on my Burms when they had RI back then .BOOMM in 4 days , completely back to normal , but finished out cycle.Josh , like us these things have to just take their course , the best you can to is offer optimum husbandry .Is the animal eating ? When your sick a little toast helps the resistance or soup , right.Maybe offer a small meal as well , if it DOES eat , it can only be good .For strength , and the reassurance that the animal feels better enough to eat .Hope this helps , and sorry we got off on the wrong foot in the past.

thanks for the help. and hey i didn't think we got off on the wrong foot. the great thing about this hobby is that there are soo many morphs we can all work with the ones we love. As I said before it was just my choice not to work with them. I would never look down on anyone for doing it and I look forward to drooling over the crazy morph crosses with them. Hey who knows one day in the future when the price comes down, I'll buy one and put it on display in my living room ($4k is alot for a pet/display animal, lol). and again thanks for the help, Josh Hutto

Josh

I have primarily used Amikacin for treating RI, but in most cases I saw improvement at about 7-10 days. After 14-18 days all symptoms were gone.

There was one exception, a rescue boa, which to my understanding was subject to repeated RI over several years due to very poor husbandry.

This poor guy was in bad shape when I got him; it took 2 rounds of Amikacin, and a 10 day round of Baytril injections to clear him up. After 5-6 weeks he was better, but couldn’t quite get over the final hump, so my vet gave me the round of Bayril, and he recovered in about 2 months. I still have him now (2 years later) and he has been fine since.

good luck
