What to you all think of flagyl. Been hearind different opinions.
If given the right dosage, is it good or bad for a young snake? And is one application enough??
Thanks.

Flaygyl, or metronidazole is a presciption and should be used as such. See your veterinarian.
If your boas are all happy and healthy, don't give them anything but proper diet and husbandry.

Where does everyone get their drugs?
In most cases we need Baytril.
I'd rather get it from somewhere else other than paying for a vet visit.
Flagyl is a good one to have on hand too.
I can't believe this conversation.. well, I can because I've heard it before... what third world archaic country are you from?
To give this post some substance, and to perhaps avoid it from being deleted, I'll suggest that you go to the avma website (or cvma if in canada) and ask why prescription drugs are only available from a doctor.
It is illegal to sell prescription drugs without the written consent of a doctor.
It is also illegal to practice veterinary medicine without a liscence.
While your fuming at me insulting your intellegence (I only know you from the words you post), I hope you at least understand that all this is set up for the benifit of the animals and not to screw you over.

When it's used correctly it works really well. I have heard that extended use, or if you have to use it, then stop, then use it some more, you are running a serious risk of causing psycological mental problems with them. Have you ever seen a snake thats 'star struck' I think the jargon term is. When they crain their neck up, don't seem to know up from down blah blah blah...I've heard that flagyl can do this.
There is a medicine in circulation called septra that is supposed to cure resp. infections. DON"T USE IT! all it is is amochsicilian (spelling?? you know when you have the flu ad your mom gave you the pick bubblegum meds, that stuff!) and robotussin. Where I useto work we used it on 2 pythons and they both died.
If you think you animal needs meds, please go to the vet!

Thanks Ian...
Do you own any reptiles?
Why go to a vet and pay $50-100 just to pay more for the prescription of Baytril we know we need?
I know we should see a vet, but when one medication is needed for most reptile ailments, I don't want to pay for a vet visit everytime.
I own over 40 reptiles and have over the past 16 years. Not alot compared to some, but I do have experience. I also work in the vet industry and have a bit of perspective on the thing.
The idea of slapping Baytril on any problem a reptile has is becoming archaic practice and the ever evolving world of medicine can provide better care for your reptiles. If you want quickie-mart service cross the border into mexico; I hear you can do whatever the hell you want to your animals down there.
Is 50-100 bucks really that much? And if it's happening often then it's not the vet you need to complain about but your husbandry practices.
Exam $50
C&S $60
Med's $15
CBC $60

Knowing you've done all you can for your animal= priceless
In the mean time, get a pet rock, I hear they never get sick.
>>I know we should see a vet,
You really do because...
>>but when one medication is needed for most reptile ailments, I don't want to pay for a vet visit everytime.
...because the above is NOT true!
