So, what's up with............

Kerby... Sep 02, 2005 10:22 AM

So what's up with the numbers?

Top Ten Popular Forums: Kingsnake Forum is now down to #3 (1,685) when we have been over 2,100 numerous times. What does this number mean? It IS NOT how many people post....so what is it? and how come it changes from a higher number to a lower number?

Top Ten Forums by Posts: Kingsnake Forum is #3 (31,337)

So what is the difference between "Popular" and "Forums by Posts"

Thanks

Kerby...

Top 10 Forums is based on a cumulative total number of posts (archived and current) since the new forum system went live back in February 2003.

Top 10 Popular Forums is based on the 'current' posts i.e. posts that are active on the forum and have not scrolled off into the archives. Each forum can hold 5 pages worth of current posts (250 threads plus any of the hundreds of replies to those main threads). Once a week, the system archives all threads that have scrolled beyond page 5 - a couple of forums actually manage to accumulate 6-8 pages worth of threads before the weekly archive happens.

Some forums are more seasonally active than others and others are active all the time. The popular forum list reflects a more accurate look at which forums are popular at this current point in time whereas the other type of top ten list is over the long-term.
