Green banana roach vs. lobster roach question

Amanda E Jul 18, 2003 09:05 AM

I've heard a few of you talk about feeding lobster roaches to your herps. Well, I haven't found anyone breeding these near me, but I have found someone who breeds green banana roaches.

Do you know anything about them? Would these be just as good as lobster roaches? Just as nutritious? Easy to breed?

I would be feeding them to leopard geckos and crested geckos, possibly a uroplatus gecko.

I wouldn't do it. Banana roaches are very nervous and fast. They also fly readily and they fly fast too! Plus they are pretty small. It would be very hard to move them to your lizard's cages without many escaping into your house. (fortunately, they need moisture and most probably wouldn't survive that long in your house--unless they could find water!) Also, they hide very quickly and I doubt if your lizards could catch very many before the all hide. They are very pretty, but I don't keep any anymore. I kept some for about 2 years (just to look at) because they look so neat, but I never bothered trying to feed them to anything after the first attempt. It's pretty exciting to take the lid off their cage and have 6 fly out at top speed! They're just too much trouble. The non-winged nymphs might be good for small lizards because they are such a small food item. Lobsters are a much better way to go.
