Confused about 66% x 66%

GASNAKEMAN Sep 02, 2005 05:38 PM

Assuming male and female are 66% Het for the same gene. What would be the outcome of breeding the two?
Thanks,
Willam

Well that means each snake has a 66%chance of being het. Lets say were talking albino! Then you wont know for sure if those animals are het or not until you breed the offspring together therefore proving that they were. I think i said that right haha

in other words each animal has 34% chance of not carrying the desired trait. and if you breed possible x possible, well you know you double it. and ONE may be het and the other not they will show normal offspring.Yadda Yadda.....Chris

Forget the 66% for a second - what that really means is that is the percentage chance that the animal is het, but in actuality, the animal is het, or not. Therefore there are 3 possible outcomes of a breeding.
Assume that you are looking at albinism where "A" is wildtype (normal) and "a" is albino.
If both parents are het (Aa) than a breeding would produce ratios of one AA, two Aa, and one aa offspring. This means that any of the normal appearing offspring has a 2/3 (=66%) chance of being het.
If one parent is het (Aa) and the other is not (AA), then all offspring will be normal appearing, and 1/4 will be het.
If neither animal is actually het, all offspring will be normal.
The best way to try to prove them out as hets is to breed them to albinos - if you breed them together and only one is het you'll never know.

No, If you brred an albino with a norm all of the offspring will be 100%het for albino!
