Sunlight vs albinos

mk-ultra Jul 18, 2003 09:36 AM

Anyone has any valuable information about albino snakes resistance to sunlight . In my case a burmese python , is sunlight dangerous for albinos snakes ? Are they more fragile to UV rays because they are albino or is there no relation at all ???

thx for any answer

This is something I would like to know as well. I do know that they are more sensetive to light and will try to avoid direct exposure to it if at all possible. I have heard many rumors about albinos and supposed related "genetic weaknesses" to everything, from infection to disease and yes, even a susceptibility to light that can lead to blindness. I have always kept an open ear to these rumors and as a result have always kept my eyes wide open. To date I have personally witnessed NO evidence to substanciate any validity to any of these rumors/beliefs where disease or infection are concerned. But I have seen an abundance of evidence that indicates that albino pythons experience a discomfort when exposed to bright light. I keep no lights in my albino python cages and only allow what little light is cast from the ceiling fan/overhead lights to enter their cages. Though weak, they still seem to often avoid this light and usually have their heads tucked into the shadowy recesses of the cage. I have a few acquaintences that own pet stores that have numerous albinos on display with an additional wide array of other python phases and species, and under the very bright display lights the pythons have no escape. But almost invariably the albinos have their heads tucked under or between folds of their bodies so as to sheild their eyes from the light. The other species and phases do not and seem indifferent and unaffected. So based on this and other, similar behavior I have seen, I would wager that they (albinos) are highly sensetive to light and it maybe pains them, or is certainly uncomfortable for them. With this in mind I do not doubt that they may in fact have a possible susceptibility to blindness or sight damage when repeatedly exposed to excessive light.

Well hehe since i dont know any of you 2 , you both have as much credibility . But Brian gave the best explanation I could get and i have to agree with the fact that they hide their head now that you have mentioned it . Ill keep a close eye on the behavior . Thx a lot Brian
