Gravid Veiled digging but not laying (long)

pcole Jul 18, 2003 09:59 AM

Hope someone can offer some insight on this. I have a very gravid Veiled Cham. At 30 days post copulation (and a near twofold increase in weight) I placed her in a large rubbermaid container with a deep, damp, packed sand substrate and a small hibiscus plant. The substrate was shaped to resemble an upslope from one end and a flat surface on top to the other end. On Wed. around 1pm I noticed that she had begun excavating a hole into the slope of the substrate beginning at the base of the slope. When I went to sleep at around 11pm she was still digging and I could only see the tip of her tail in the hole. Upon waking at 8am on Thurs. I checked on her and she had bugun excavating another hole into the slope but at the back of the container. Checked her before turning in for the night at 11pm last night and she was not to be seen as she was fully inside the hole. Checking on her this morning she was still in the hole came out of the hole shortly thereafter...still very obviously gravid. Any thoughts? Do females ever dig "test holes". What could be the cause of this behaviour? Any thoughts, insight, suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Pete

This is from my experience:

This is what I would do (and did):

put her in there, let her dig, and if you see she just doesn't lay her eggs after a couple of hours, you can give her a break and put her back in her cage temporarly. I found that if I let her with the dirt too long she will dig but not lay. Also, be really carefull when taking the eggs out, they can be pretty hidden in the dirt sometimes.

It once took 3 days of her digging and not laying.

This is just my opinion and it may not be good for your female!
I hope i helped!
