The fruit fly issue potential?

sesimmons Sep 03, 2005 05:26 PM

I always read about the fruit fly issue in humid setups for our leaftail friends, what about throwing in a green tree frog, or something similar. I know the potential risks about mixing in a frog with them, but I would venture to say they would not bother each other. Any exeprience with this.

not a great idea in the first place... regardless, a tree frog is not going to pay any attention to the flies... all they are going to do is get their fill of crickets that are intended for the uros...

secondly, the flies that people speak of are not fruit flies... they are carrion flies and the best way to regulate them is to keep the cages free of dead crickets and gecko feces... they do thrive in humid envirnments, but that is not the issue... take away their food source and they will deplete...

I asked how to get rid of fruit flies a week or so ago, and was told pretty much the same thing... get rid of the dead (I'm pretty good at picking up poop already) crickets, and the fruit flies will go away. I cleaned out the cage, and have been feeding 3-4 crickets daily instead of 6-10 every 2-3 days. I also started buying medium crickets so they would hopefully live longer.

The fly population decreased by 60% the day I cleaned the tank (mostly dispersing throughout the house) and have since dropped down to practically nothing. There's still a fly here and there, but they don't swarm out the top when I mist the cage anymore. Its a HUGE improvement, and occurred much faster than I had expected. No more flies in the cage, and best of all, no more flies in the house either!!!!!

nearly anything ben says should take precendence over what I say. he's just slightly more eloquent in his replies than me.

LOL...

I just figured it was a good opportunity to let everyone know that the same advice worked like a charm for me, and to add a little oomph to what was said at the same time.

I'll remember his name now as one more person here that knows more than I ever will...
