Arizona trip from August 4-5

keith c Sep 03, 2005 11:40 PM

I went to the Santa Ritas in the first week of August. We arrived the day after a very large storm rolled over all most all of Arizona. It cooled things down the next night in the moutains and only found a juvenile lyre and a splendida down
on the flats. The second night started off with more rain and cooler temps but I did manage to find two lyres out in the rain.

I was there around the same time and saw a couple kings, but no lyres. That king is fairly typical of the area with blackish head and narrow banding. They often get even blacker with age.

Lyres are really pretty snakes. I'm in Tucson and I haven't seen any Lyres this year but I realized recently its a temp thing. (I just hadn't given it much thought before.) I tend to pull out when the temps drop out of rattlesnake range. I think I'll hang out a little longer and try to find one. They really are pretty. Here's a pretty little snake I did find recently though - a yearling Green Rat from the Santa Ritas.

Lyre's tend to come out at the end of the night when it cools down. I found two of thre in the rain crossing the road.

Love those greenies

I think we try to cover too much ground sometimes. When in the mtns I tend to do the same thing, head back down to lower ground when it gets too cool for the rattlers. Noone likes getting skunked and when the temps get cool we usually don't see anything. Sometimes it takes a lot of patience just to see one snake. Last year I only saw three lyre snakes and I saw them all in one night in July on one mtn.
