Determining Florida Box Turtle gender.

ScooterXX7 Sep 04, 2005 05:31 PM

I originally thought the Florida Box I caught was a male, but I could be wrong. He/She is spending a lot of time under the little shelter board with the female. What could it mean? Its too small for any "turtle action", so they must be "hanging out". I looked under the shells of all three, and they all appear to have a conclave compression. Its...weird. I thought only males had that. Could it be possible that my female turtle is...a male too? I need websites in helping me determine Florida Box Turtle sex, with comparisons and such. I can't find any. Thanks.

Box turtle males have a long thick tail, females have a dainty short little stubby tail.
In my ornates I've noticed that the male has much thicker heavier looking legs too.
