Update on Poisioned petco Whites TF (see below post)

riiotgrrl Sep 04, 2005 07:02 PM

Two or three weeks ago i rescued Sifaka, a baby whites tree frog, from almost certain death. The whites and green tree frogs had been sprayed with a CLEARLY Marrked spray bottle full of cleaning solution. When i arrived i was talking with the reptile specialist about the situation. We went to look at the amphibians and i helped him pull out a couple of dead ones.....only to find a badly colored half dead whites. The specialist, who i had worked with previously, let me take the little guy home.
After calling around, i found that no local vets could do much for the frog. I found out from the forums that there was a certain chem that would stimulate the poision gland and flush the poisions out of his system, but no one in my area would do that. So, plan B, i began a rain chamber schedule: 4 hours a day in a small space with constant running water. I also, when i put him back in his enclosure, added activated carbon to the underside of his paper towel. I changed the papers 2x daily, as well as the carbon. I also coated the frog in 'stress coat'. After speaking to some of the vets, i began feeding him a diluted mixture of hills a/d and t-rex tree frog dust every other day.
For a while, i was sure that Sifaka's liver was completely destroyed. He appeared to have an adaema in his abdomen as well.
BUT: last night, Sifaka ate his very first cricket!! He can also walk now...no longer in circles, and he has even began to hop. He has not tried climbing yet, but i have him in a small round enclosure for now. Hopefully his progress continues on an upward slant. I am so proud of a small victory!! Below are before and after photos. What a difference!!

im so glad this worked out for you.. its always dissapointing when the places that are supposed to know how to care for the animals end up hurting them instead (ive been a petstore employee for 6 years, so im entitled to say this). .. i read your previous post and crossed my fingers.. congratulations on saving him... especially without much vet help... im sure hes happy to be in much better hands..

Great news. I recently rescued two jackson's chameleons that where close to death from a local pet shop, so I knw what you are going through. After much time and care, (as well as money, and vet visits) they are recovering nicely. That frog is certainly grateful that someone as caring as yourself came around. Be proud of yourself for this. Nice work.

I am glad the frog is doing better. White's are some of the toughest frogs I have ever dealt with. Hopefully the worst is over.
