A question about indigos.

lichanura Sep 05, 2005 12:58 AM

I have never had an indigo. Why do they say that indigos are messy? Thanks.

They are! It is probably the only negative thing I can think of in terms of their maintenance. When they defecate, it takes on the sound of something exploding and they will, on many occasions, just spray it everywhere (which usually happens right after you clean their cage!). But, if you stay on top of it (which may require daily checking), they are no worse than anythng else; it only takes a few minutes to clean and if kept on something like aspen, is fairly manageable. But, I will say that I can't think of a more rewarding animal I have ever kept than working with indigos; they are magnificent animals and it is a true privilege to work with them.

Thank you for the reply. That doesn't sound too bad. Now to try to find a pair.

In my experience, BT cribos are nowhere near as bad as far as the poop factor goes. Its really no worse than cleaning up after my gophersnakes. Its much more solid, doesn't smell as bad, and doesn't happen as frequently with my cribos.

The key seems to be finding it quick and getting it cleaned up before they have chance to play in it and spread it around

....of course, clean newspaper seems to work as a laxitive for these guys.

They must like the smell of their poop.

Of course, clean underwear does the same thing for me.
