Tokay housing question

liv2surf34 Jul 18, 2003 11:31 AM

Is 30 gal. tall big enough for a full grown tokay? I have heard a lot of people say 20 gal. tall but i think that is too small and i hear others say 65 gal. at the very least, which i think it a little on the big side. Im just curious on what size tank everyone here keeps their tokays in, so post what you got.

I just got a free 80 so I'm using that I think a 35 should be ok though, even though personally I would do a 40-45 just because you can make it look better without cramming everything in.

best thing to remember whatever size you use. Height is most important. Tokays are not ground dwellers and I believe if you have one thats on the ground alot its in too small a tank, not enough high hides or is not healthy. Mine have seemed happier over the last 2 years as they have progressed to a larger and larger tank. They use all the space. I may not see my Leos or AFTs out much but my Tokays are out every night roaming, jumping, watching me on the pc. Mines a little overkill but I keep my three adults in a 120 gal.

I am a long time keeper and breeder of tokays. And believe me: 65 g is far from being on the big side, its more or less a bare minimum.
Yes, Tokays do survive, live long and even breed in 45g, 30 g even 20 g. But that still is livelong torture to an active lizard which runs around a lot at night. How can a 1 ft lizard run, jump and find various temperature and humidity zones in a 30 g tank?
In fact I do not keep Tokays in tanks smaller than 200 g and If I am honest, I think thats still on the small side. Even the tokays in my 770 g tank make use of all that room.
But you can´t recommend such sizes without being ignored in a forum. So I always recommend 65 to 100 g, which may be an acceptable compromise.
Those who keep Tokays in smaller cages should watch the difference in behaviour of the same animal in a big cage. Not only do they become much more active and vocal, but they are also much less agressive and often significantly more prolific.
Please, please take that serious-always have in mind, what an ACTIVE 1 ft big lizard would need and not, what a 1 ft lizard fits into just sizewise.
