what are you feeding it now, and how often?

goregrind Sep 06, 2005 05:52 AM

right now he is probably almost a year old, just ocer 24 inches and feeding on mice about every week and a half. about a month ago the petstore was out of mice so i fed him a gerbil. an once in a while my friends like to see him eat a pinkie because he eats them sideways and its pretty funny.

i can definetly feel his spine, theres not one fat cell between it and the skin. but theres a big pocket if fat all down his side and in some spots his ribs are hard to feel, now that i wrote this im thinking he is just healthy

Can we see a pic? Are you sure it's fat and not muscle?

How old is it? Young snakes shouldn't be affected too much by being a little obese, at least, it's not as much of an issue as it is with adult snakes. Ball pythons are a thick bodied snake, I would consider a lot of ball pythons I've seen kept as pets underweight. Does your snake get much excercise? The main problem I've had with overfed snakes is irregular feeding.

The rule of thumb I have heard is that as long as you can feel the spine if you run your finger along a snake's back, it's not fat.

BPs are rather chubby snakes as is.
