thinking of getting a BRB

janome Sep 05, 2005 04:19 PM

i was looking at some photos of babies someone has in my area. they were born last week sometime. they look real pretty.
from what i've read they are docile with handling and get to 5-6 foot.
can someone tell me more about their care? i was reading the care sheet a few posts down. i was wondering if they do need any kind of heat sorce. we keep our room temps in the 76-77 degree range. from what i read on that care sheet that is an idea temp for them.
a snake that need no extra heating would be great. also would a 40 gallon breeder size tank be ok once its adult size?
i do have 6 other snakes so i'm not new to them.
thanks for any info.

Janome,
...Some people do keep them with the entire cage in the mid 70s. You just have to be careful that with seasonal changes the room temperature does not go too far in either direction away from the mid 70s. Many of my BRBs are over 6 feet. Growth to over 6 feet is especially common with the females. A very few females will eventually grow a little past 7 feet. Some males exceed 6 feet in length. A 40 gallon breeder size tank will be just large enough for most adult BRBs. The occasional one that exceeds 7 feet would need a larger cage. If you use a tank style cage with screen top too much of the humidity will escape through the screen. Most people solve this problem by covering most of the screen with something solid to keep the humidity in the cage.
Good Luck,
Jeff

if i were to use a heat sorce what would be better...just a incandecent light or UTH pad? are they more arboreal or terresteral (not sure on that spelling).

UTH IMO is better minimally controlled by a rheostat, optimately controlled by a thermostat. Mine are more terrestrial, possibly because they don't have access to any climbing structures. The ones that have cypress mulch are buried most the time.
