track for sliding glass doors

herbivorous Sep 05, 2005 06:17 PM

I figured this might be the right place to ask a question. Where can you find the track used for sliding glass doors on cages? I've looked all over and can't find anything that's really close. I'm really looking for something like what they have on the Vision cages, but anything for like 1/8" glass will work. If anyone knows where I can find it (websites work well), please let me know. Thanks.

Most people use 1/4" glass. Rockler works. I got to a local glass shop. Derek Lee

Great looking cage. I build very similar ones, you might consider recess those screws on the sides, putty over them and then paint the outside of the cage black, then get some of that Fleckstone paint to texture it, I like Manhattan Mist, it's a gray and white that flecks onto the black base and gives it a granite look and hides imperfections too. I make a track on the outside, front of my cages and one piece of glass that can open all the way for easy access. The only problem is if the cage is next to something like a wall then you can only open it so far or only in one direction. The one I'm about to build next is going to be in a location like that so I'm going to try to put the doors on like you do. Thanks for the idea. Oh, also, I like using pegboard for the back wall, then I don't have to install vents on the sides like you do. Your way seems to look and work well, though. What kind of methods do you use for heat?I use incandesent bulbs, I make wire covers over them to prevent direct contact with the snake and they are on timers and the temp is adjusted with a rheostat, I have a night time bulb that comes on at sunset for night time heat. The bulbs are all set on one side of the cage for a temperture gradient. And I have a couple big plants in there now, so I have full spectrum lighting on a timer too.

Oh, if your looking for the tracks for the glass on the outside of the cage this one is different, I made two regular doors on hinges that open from the center, outward. It's nice because I can open them both and access the the whole cage, sometimes that's necessary to handle my jungle carpet python. She's not always friendly. I also now use cypress mulch instead of aspen, and I have two ultra fine misting valves that spray distilled water into the cage twice a day for a minute each. Now the humidity stays about 60% or so. This cage is 4'Longx4'tallx2'Deep. I'm building the next one to sit on top of it. It will be 4'Longx2'Tallx18"Deep. It won't have that lower area but will have the upper half shelf, the shelf increases the surface area and it's where my JCP goes to be alone or digest her food. Most of them time she's right in front on the center shelf on the left side, very visible.
