there are 4 ways you can sex a snake(that i know of) but only 2 can be done by a beginner the first two are them and the other two take a professional or require someone who knows the process to teach you.
1. scale count method-grab a shed from the snake in question and possibly a magnifying glass depending on the size of the snake. I use a fine tip felt marker(very fine tip) and mark the scales as i count them with every 10th scale having a thicker or longer line. get the total # of scales from the chin to the cloaca and then the total from the cloaca to the tail tip. Post the numbers on here and i'm sure someone can tell you if those #s indicate male or female(i can't recall the exact #s right now)
2. Take pics of the cloacal region of the snake from the ventral, side, and dorsal vview and post them on here. We can usually tell what they are by those pics but not always.
3. popping- this method can only be used for hatchlings and snakes under 18 inches in length. If done to larger snakes it could result in muscle damage. This involves the evertion of the hemipenis (male reproductive organ) of a snake. When gentle yet firm pressure is applied to the posterior of the cloaca abotu and inch or so down and slowly moved forward the hemipenis of a male will vert and look like two little pink stuctures(not very big and maybe the width of a toothpick) in the females these will not be visible. This method can be dangerous if too much pressure is applied by someone who is unexpirienced or was not properly shown. Your local herp vet or breeder can probably instruct you on how to go about using this method.
4. Probing is usually considered to be the most fail-safe. Consequentially it also requires the most precaution and effort. Many herp vets/breeders will do this service for you or show you how. It is strongly discouraged for a beginner to try this on their own. If you want to learn how you must first purchase a probe kit with smaller tips if you are sexing coloubrids. i'm sure someone else who is more expirienced w/ probing could help you out more in how to go about learning this method.
I hope i helped and i highly recommend using #1 or 2 as a beginner's method of sexing.
