Genetics question...

phiber_optikx Sep 06, 2005 01:09 AM

I would do this on my own but my laptop with my genetics calculator is in the shop! Anyway, I have been thinking about what to breed to Hope, (my snow) So, I was wondering, if I bred her to an amel het anery, or an anery het amel, would I get anery's, amel's, and snows? Or all snows?

I'm pretty sure you'd get something like this....

Snow X Amel het Anery
1/2 Amelanistic het Anerythristic
1/2 Amelanistic Anerythristic (Snow)

Snow X Anery het Amel
1/2 Anerythristic het Amelanistic
1/2 Amelanistic Anerythristic(Snow)

Ok... I don't understand why though since snow should have both genes anyway... Also this brings up another question... If you breed 1 female with 2 different males.... could you get babies from both males? Like if I bred hope (snow) to an anery male and an amel male.... would I get both genetics?

I'm not sure about that one. I'm pretty sure all your eggs would be fertilized from one male. But hopefully somebody with more knowledge about that could help you. I also use a genetics calculater to help me determine offspring. I dont have the link w/ me cuz i'm at work, but when i get home i'll post it for you.

Break it down into genetics symbols. Capital letters represent the wildtype gene for that locus. We'll use A for amel and E for Anery to avoid confusion.

Amel het anery = aaeE
Anery het amel = aAee
Snow = aaee

Amel het anery X snow:
aaeE X aaee

Since all the amel locii hold the mutant gene, all offspring will have two copies of the mutant gene.
All offspring are of the form aa**.
Since the snow carries two copies of the mutant gene for anery, so it can only contribute the mutant gene.
All offspring are of the form aae*.
The amel het anery can contribute either the mutant anery gene or the wildtype. This gives us a 50% chance of either outcome.
50% of the offspring are of the form aaee and 50% are aaeE.

So you get half of the clutch being amels het anery and half being snows.

The same logic can be applied to the anery het amel cross.

And yes, both Anery A and Amel are recessive in respect to the wild-type genes. (Amel is codominant only to Ultra, but that's a whole 'nother story.)

So I can just breed her to an amel and get 50% amels and 50 % snows.... ok. if I breed anery will it be 50% anery 50% snow? Your message was both confusuing and helpfull

If you breed your Snow to an Amel thats NOT het for anything you'll get this...

Snow X Amel
1/2 Normal het.Amelanistic 50% poss.het. Anerythristic
1/2 Amelanistic 50% poss.het. Anerythristic

If you breed your Snow to an Anery that again is NOT het for anything you'll get this....

Snow X Anery
1/2 Normal het.Anerythristic 50% poss.het. Amelanistic
1/2 Anerythristic 50% poss.het. Amelanistic

Grrr... I'm not an expert at this. I understand how it works but I cant really explain why it works. It sounds like you're really interested in producing more Snows. Obviously, the best way to do this is to breed to another snow. But if you want to get a little varity and STILL get some snows, then go w/ either an Anery het Amel or Amel het Anery.

Again, heres the post I use when I get confused.

I'm really not trying to confuse you, and I hope somebody can explain it a little more clearly for you. GOOD LUCK!!

I am not really that interested in the individual snakes... I know they will sell for about $25 each no matter what I do I am just interested in seeing how many morphs I can get in one breeding! I have a good understanding of corn genetics.... I just have trouble grasping why if a snow is amel AND anery why breeding an amel het anery wouldn't produce all three.... amel, anery, and snow... But it is because amel and anery are not co-dom and amel is dominant over anery...right? it has been a while since high school genetics... Stupid Pea Plants!

The problem with pairing Amel het Anery X Snow is that you have ZERO wild-type versions of the amel gene, so you can't possibly get an offspring that ISN'T homozygous for amelanism.

In order to get all three morphs, you need to pair your snow with a normal dh for amel and anery, for a roughly 25-25-25-25 ratio of amels, anerys, normals, and snows.

>The problem with pairing Amel het Anery X Snow is that you have ZERO wild-type versions of the amel gene, so you can't possibly get an offspring that ISN'T homozygous for amelanism.

Exactly. And the wild type version of the amelanistic mutant gene is different in structure and function from the wild type version of the anerythristic mutant gene. Which means that the wild type version of the anerythristic mutant cannot substitute for the wild type version of the amelanistic mutant gene.

Well, that's not quite right...

Snow x Amel (het for nothing) = 100% amel babies het for anery

Snow x Anery (het for nothing) = 100% anery babies het for amel

Crossing a snow, which is homozygous for BOTH anery and amel, to either an amel or an anery cannot give you normals...ever.
