Everglades Rats

phiber_optikx Sep 06, 2005 03:34 AM

Hey everyone, I was just wondering, where is a good place to get good quality everglades rats? The neon orange ones... Also, are they good pets? Compared to a corn or a black rat that is.... thanks again!

I personally like them better than Corns because they like to climb. I keep them in display cages with climbing branches. In my experience, Corns are slightly less fligthy than Glades but all of my Glades have been docile snakes. Like any snake, as babies they can be a little skittish but calm down quickly with age and regular handling. Jason at Snakesunlimited was advertising some hypos earlier that lopoked good. I don't know if he has any left. I bought a pair of hypos last year from Jim Merli that are fabulous. Their color is already as good as a true normal Glades and they are just yearlings. Here is a picture from May of the female. If either Jim or Jason have any currently available, maybe they will contact you.

Thanks Mark
I only have a male or two left this year. All the females are sold so unless someone backs out you'll have to find someone else who has them. With these snakes it is almost a must to ask to see the adults. There are alot of people who don't know any better or they just plane lie about their line being glades. In defense of the people who sell yellows as glades though I have found some people at shows who really think they have glades because the snake is not yellow. I think yellow are as variant across Florida as the corns. I have seen them in everything from brown to lemon yellow with all sorts of varience in the stripes and head color. Some people think the brownish orange yellows are glades and they just don't know any better. It doesn't help that the wholesalers sell them as glades to get more money out of them.

Also there are some killer WC glades caught each year that look amazing but they throw yellow rat looking babies from being crosses. I think someone who post here has one of the nicest WC glades I have seen but her babies are only OK from what he said. I hope he spends time with that snake and tries some differant males. I don't want to mention his name because it might offend him but he is a laid back Florida boy and I think he will know I am refering to him if he reads this and maybe he will post. Anyway good luck and get a Glades. Wait if you have to. These things can live 20+ years so you want to get a nice one.

This may just be a personal observation but all the baby everglades I've ever seen, including the ones I've bred, always seem to be alot lighter and softer in colour than the other obseletus subspecies (whether or not everglades ratsnakes are a subspecies or not isn't something I want to go into right now) All the others seem to have stronger and more defined grey markings as hatchlings, even the yellows more than glades. I could be wrong but I just wanted to see what other peoples opinions are on this.

I'm sorry the pic is a repost but it was tiny and rubbish before so I've sorted it out.
